Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire family Photography
If you’re thinking about experiencing a Family Portrait Session, the best time to book is right now
Each season brings its own beauty—from the renewing of colour in bluebell woods and the chirping of birds announcing Spring to the sunsets of Summer that shine across Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. In the beautiful countryside of the UK, it is not hard to find stunning countryside that acts as a backdrop, and your photographs will look amazing once in print and on your walls at home.
When I take photographs, I am reminded how privileged I am to be surrounded by amazing people from various backgrounds. Through my camera, I can see that each family I photograph has a unique history, and I look to bring out that uniqueness. Whoever you consider your family to be, I will aim to create the perfect moment in your photoshoot. I will provide gorgeous memories of your growing family that you can display around your home.
If you want a family photoshoot in Oxfordshire or Buckinghamshire, don’t hesitate to contact me as soon as possible so we can plan a date. I will meet you at an agreed location for an outdoor photoshoot.
What happens in a family photoshoot?
We will talk before we meet for the photoshoot, and I will help you work out what to wear and discuss the types of images you are hoping for. To make your photoshoot feel extra special, I will help you and your family pose in a way that looks natural and makes you feel comfortable in front of my camera.
Within my family photography sessions, my approach is to let you all do your own thing initially so you can avoid any initial awkwardness or shyness. We will emphasise you spending time together as a family, playing and having fun. This way, we will be able to get some authentic pictures and make time for family group photographs. Any pose suggestions from me will capture the genuine connections between you and your family members and make the images look natural.
Your family photography session will likely take place near where you live, but I am always happy to travel to a venue in Oxfordshire for your photoshoot. We live in such a beautiful county, and I love that reminder as I drive around. We will never be short of beautiful locations as our backdrop.
WONDERFUL
I have no hesitation in recommending Helen Carter Photography to you. She took wonderful family photos at our daughter’s special birthday party. Helen was very professional and so intuitive in her choice of what to take. The resulting photographs were so good.

YOUR OXFORDSHIRE FAMILY PHOTOSHOOT
If you are worried about posing in front of a camera, you are not alone. With my experience, I can help position you, so you do not feel unnaturally posed; you are just having fun. This will be the most flattering for you and your family, and the session will be relaxed and informal.
Many families also ask what to wear during our family photoshoot.
I will discuss this with you before the photoshoot and give you an idea of what works and doesn’t, so you don’t clash. I will also help you coordinate your clothing so you look your best and the photographs have a classic feel that will look good for years.
Overall, there are a few suggestions that are helpful to remember:
- wear clothes that make you feel good and, more importantly, make you feel comfortable
- dress appropriately for the weather
- avoid distracting logos, pictures & words on clothing
- coordinate outfits with a few complementary colours
- avoid black, neon and bold colours
- optional jewellery, scarves, etc., can add to the coordination of colours your family wears.
YOUR QUESTIONS
What happens on an outdoor photoshoot?
Outdoor portrait photoshoots are a great way to be yourselves and have fun with your family. Children can run around and explore. My approach is to encourage you to do your own thing initially to avoid any initial awkwardness or shyness. We will make time for family group photographs but the emphasis will be on you spending time together, playing and having fun. This way we will be able to get some authentic pictures and any pose suggestions from me will be aiming to capture the true connections amongst you and your family members.
What is the best time to have our photographs taken?
Light changes as it moves through the sky and when the sun rises the light is warmer. Before the sun sets there is a “golden hour” where there is a warm golden light beautiful for photographs. The blue hour, at twilight, happens after the sun sets when there is still light in the sky.
For family photographs the best time of day is in the morning or early evening, avoiding the harsh midday sun or tired children (and adults). Depending on the time of year we will arrange a time to meet usually in the morning or early evening.
What if it rains?
The sessions will be weather dependent and whilst rain might not stop us having fun on the photoshoot jumping in and out of puddles. I will keep an eye on the weather and we can confirm the session 24 hours before the photoshoot.
If you’ve booked a mini session, we will already have a backup date in the diary – usually the following day.
For bespoke sessions, if it looks like it’s only going to rain for a short while and we both have flexibility in our diaries we could move the shoot to slightly earlier or later in the day. If that’s not possible we’ll reschedule to a new date free of charge.
