Capturing the golden-hour connection between you and your horse
Summer is one of my favourite times of year for equine photography.
The days are longer, the countryside is looking beautiful, and there is something rather magical about being outside with your horse on a warm summer evening.
And then there is the light…
As the sun begins to drop, the harshness of the daytime light disappears and everything takes on that beautiful warm, golden glow. It is the perfect time to create photographs that feel relaxed, romantic and full of emotion.
If you are thinking about booking an equine photoshoot this summer, here are a few things you can do to prepare — and a few reasons why a sunset photoshoot with your horse could be something really special.
Why choose a sunset photoshoot?
There is something about the evening light that can transform an ordinary field into something quite magical.
The low sun creates warmth and depth, catches the edges of your horse’s mane and coat and can create that beautiful golden glow around you both.
But these sessions aren’t just about photographing a beautiful horse.
For me, the most important part of an equine photoshoot is the relationship between you and your horse.
The little moments.
The way they look at you.
A hand resting on their neck.
Walking together through a field.
A quiet cuddle.
That moment when your horse comes over simply because they want to be close to you.
These are the photographs that tell your story.
Start with your horse
Before your photoshoot, give some thought to how you would like your horse to look.
A good groom will help their coat shine beautifully in the evening light. Make sure their mane and tail are tidy and that their hooves are clean.
Don’t forget the little details too:
- Clean your headcollar or bridle.
- Make sure any tack you are using is clean and well presented.
- Bring brushes and grooming equipment with you.
- Have fly spray available — summer flies can have very different ideas about our carefully planned photographs!
- Bring treats if your horse responds well to them.
Most importantly, don’t worry about making your horse perfect.
Your horse is an individual, and their personality is exactly what we want to capture.
What should you wear?
This is something we can chat about before your session.
For photographs of you and your horse, I generally recommend choosing something that makes you feel comfortable and confident while also complementing the surroundings.
Summer is the perfect opportunity to wear something a little more special.
A flowing dress can look beautiful in the evening light, particularly when photographed walking alongside your horse. Alternatively, you might prefer a more relaxed equestrian look — boots, jeans and a favourite shirt or jacket.
There is no right or wrong choice.
The most important thing is that you feel like you.
Think about colours that work well with your horse and the location, and avoid anything with very busy patterns or large logos that could distract from the two of you.
And if you can’t decide?
Bring a couple of options and we can chat about them before we start.
Think about the location
A sunset session works particularly well somewhere with plenty of open space.
Fields, long grasses, woodland edges and beautiful countryside can all provide wonderful backgrounds.
The location doesn’t have to be somewhere exotic or miles away.
Sometimes the place where you spend time with your horse every day is the perfect location because it is somewhere where you both already feel comfortable.
Before the shoot, we’ll discuss the location and think about where the sun will be and how we can make the most of the evening light.
Don’t worry about posing
This is probably one of the biggest concerns people have before a photoshoot.
“But I don’t know what to do!”
Don’t worry — that’s my job.
I will guide you throughout the session, but I don’t want your photographs to feel stiff or overly posed.
Instead, we’ll create opportunities for you to interact naturally with your horse.
You might walk together, stand quietly, groom them, cuddle, or simply spend some time together.
Some of my favourite images often happen in between the planned photographs.
Allow your horse to be a horse
Horses don’t always follow the plan.
They may decide they need to investigate something in the distance.
They might pull a funny face.
They may want to stop for a scratch.
Or they may suddenly decide that the grass is far more interesting than the photographer!
And that’s okay.
In fact, those moments can make some of the most memorable photographs.
A relaxed horse makes for a relaxed photoshoot, so there is no need to worry if everything doesn’t happen exactly as planned.
What about the heat?
Summer evenings are usually much more comfortable for horses than the middle of a hot summer day, which is another reason I love sunset sessions.
We can plan the session around the cooler part of the evening, while still taking advantage of that gorgeous golden light.
Of course, the welfare of your horse always comes first.
If the weather is particularly hot, unsettled or unsuitable, we can discuss rearranging the session.
And then we wait for the golden light…
There is a lovely point during the evening when the light starts to change.
The sun gets lower.
The shadows become softer.
Everything becomes warmer.
And suddenly the ordinary becomes extraordinary.
This is when we can create those beautiful, atmospheric portraits of you and your horse together.
Images that aren’t just photographs of a horse.
Images that show your relationship, your connection and the memories you have created together.
Your horse is part of your family
For many of us, our horses are so much more than animals we ride.
They are our companions, our confidants and a huge part of our lives.
We spend countless hours caring for them, riding them, grooming them and simply being with them.
But life moves quickly.
Horses grow older. Children grow up. Circumstances change.
That’s why I believe photographs of you together are so important.
